US Senate Passes Bill to Compensate Michigan Tribe for Stolen Land

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community in Michigan is one step closer to receiving compensation for land that was stolen from them nearly 200 years ago.

The U.S. Senate recently passed legislation led by Sen. Gary Peters, and Sen. Debbie Stabenow to settle the longstanding land claims between the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and the current landowners, rewarding them with approximately $34 million.

However, there are a few more hurdles that must be addressed before the agreement can pass. The legislation must go through the House of Representatives and then be signed into law by President Joe Biden; however, Peters and Stabenow are confident the agreement will make it through.
