GR group using grant to reduce gun violence

The West Grand Neighborhood Association is working to educate the community on violent crimes before the start of warmer summer months.

Annette Vandenberg, the organization's executive director, says they have been working on gun safety in neighborhoods.

Vandenberg says they are concerned after seeing 40 homicides in Grand Rapids in 2021.

She says they value the Second Amendment but at the same time they want to teach adults to lock up their weapons to keep kids safe.

WGNO is using a $10,000 grant to work with the Grand Rapids Police Department to educate the community on safe gun ownership.

The campaign will feature posters and billboards reminding gun owners to lock up their gun to avoid shootings and stolen weapons.
