GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Gov. Gretchen Whitmer repeated yesterday that she has no plans to enact a statewide mask mandate for schools.

She said any decisions on masking will be made by county health officials and school boards.

Whitmer said the presence of vaccines informed that decision. The Pfizer vaccine has been approved under an emergency use authorization for people 12 and older.

"Last year, we had a lot of debate over gubernatorial powers - powers that I never wanted to use but had to use to keep people safe,” Whitmer told WOOD-TV. "We didn't have vaccines, we didn't even know that masks were going to be the most important tool that we had to keep yourself safe until we had vaccines. We now have those."
