Racial Justice Group to Protest GRPD's Hiring of Fired KDPS Chief

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Justice for Black Lives says it's going to protest the Grand Rapids Police Department's hiring of the former Kalamazoo Public Safety chief tonight in downtown Grand Rapids.

Karianne Thomas was fired last year amid criticism about the way KDPS handled George Floyd protests, vandalism and a Proud Boys rally.

GRPD said it was hiring Thomas as the department's chief of staff, a newly-created civilian role, last week.

Thomas worked at KDPS for nearly three decades.
