Doctors say COVID surge is different this time

Spectrum Health officials say this surge of COVID cases is different than before.

Spectrum Health West Michigan President Dr. Darryl Elmouchi says the average age of inpatients is 57, which is a decade younger than the last surge.

As of Wednesday, the health system had 291 inpatient individuals being treated for COVID, with 70 of those patients in intensive care.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services confirmed 5,584 new cases and 45 deaths.

State labs tested at a positivity rate of 12.28 percent.
