GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Mayor Rosalyn Bliss says she did the right thing by shifting $400,000 from the Grand Rapids Police Department budget.
That change was passed during a city commission meeting this week.
"The conversations are happening and as we move forward and create a stronger sense of safety where people feel like they're being treated equitably, we have to be very deliberate and thoughtful about those transitions and changes and what those look like,” Bliss told WOOD-TV.
Third ward commissioner Senita Lenear voted against the change, saying it didn't go far enough.
"It doesn’t make sense to me to start filling these 'onesie,' 'twosie' positions without having a clear picture we're trying to accomplish," Lenear told the television station.
During the most-recent city commission meeting, the city attorney shut down discussion about a $9 million reduction.
