GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — NEWS 8 reports a small group of protesters holding signs could be seen gathering at the intersection of Fulton Street and Ionia Avenue. The protestors gathered about an hour after a rumored protest was set to begin in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids Monday afternoon,
Multiple law enforcement agencies — including Grand Rapids police, Michigan State Police, the National Guard and the Kent and Ottawa county sheriff’s offices who were placed on alert — continue to stand guard in the area, blocking streets around the Grand Rapids Police Department.
GRPD said the rumored protest, which was supposed to start outside Van Andel Arena and continue to the nearby police department, was not a permitted event, and police encouraged the community to stay home.
News 8 was told by one protester in the group of about 30 people that she showed up because she can’t stay silent as black people across the nation are murdered.
She said, “As a person with privilege, I can’t sit back and watch that happen and I’m using my voice to protest against that grave injustice."
