Roughly 90,000 college students now eligible for food assistance

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) —Eligible college students will be able to gain access to food assistance during the coronavirus pandemic thanks to a new statewide initiative.

Officials say that almost 90,000 Michigan college students in the state are eligible for the program.

Career and Technical Education students who attend class at least part time will now be able to qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The state's Department of Health and Human Services and Labor Economic Opportunity said the end-goal is designed to keep Michigan competitive by keeping students in school as the economy recovers.
