State officials update on coronavirus impact as total cases surpass 44,000

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Health department officials with the state of Michigan reported 44 new deaths linked to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths statewide to 4,179.

State officials also noted that eight of those newly recorded deaths were discovered in a routine check of death certificates to find any that weren’t previously reported.

There were 447 new COVID-19 cases confirmed, bringing the total case number to 44,397.

Health department officials also did not report any additional information on how Monday’s incomplete report of infections and deaths, caused by a software malfunction, affected Tuesday’s report.

Kent County only saw a small daily number of new cases at 60, and total cases countywide were at 1,914. Kent county officials say There have been 40 coronavirus deaths to date.
