Need firewood? Michigan DNR drops fee for collecting wood in parks

LANSING, Mich. (WOODTV) —There's good news out of Lansing for those who are looking for firewood this time of year. The Michigan DNR has permit fees for wood gathered from public forests.

In normal times, a $20 fee is normally collected to allow Michigan residents together wood in state forests. Now, that $20 fee is being waived because certain DNR offices are closed because of the coronavirus. The season began Friday, the Department of Natural Resources said.

The permits for gathering wood are good for designated state forest land in the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula. Maps are available online. Each household can collect up to five cords of wood, although the wood can’t be sold or traded.

Even though the DNR has dropped the fee for the permits, persons must still apply for one online atMichigan.gov/fuelwood.
