GOP lawmakers want firmer timeline on emergency order extension

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said on Monday that her plan to reopen Michigan’s economy will happen safely and slowly, yet she is facing increasing pressure to move the process along more quickly.

Some GOP legislators say differences of opinion with Whitmer could lead to a showdown over extending the current 'state of emergency' order in place in Michigan.

Under an issued 'state of emergency' order, the government is given the power to take special actions to deal with a crisis. It is separate from the executive orders Whitmer has issued, like the stay-at-home order.

On Monday, Whitmer said she will ask that the Legislature extends the state of emergency, currently scheduled to expire at the end of the month, 28 more days.
