Face Mask FAQ: How to properly wear – and clean your cloth face mask

by: Nexstar Media Wire/WOOD TV

(NEXSTAR) — Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued guidelines to help educate individuals on how to wear — and care for — their cloth face masks.

Per issued reports, the CDC advises persons use a face covering in public settings where keeping a safe social distance is difficult.

The CDC offered the following guidelines:

  • Children under 2 should not wear a face covering
  • The covering should include multiple layers of fabric
  • It should allow unrestricted breathing
  • The face covering should fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • It should maintain shape and quality after a machine wash and dry

Persons wearing homemade masks should take care to properly wash their hands before putting the covering on their face. When removing it, the CDC says avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and thoroughly wash your hands right after.
