Sunday storm poses downed tree, limb dangers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Tree-clearing services across West Michigan are scrambling to clean up the damage from recent ice storms ahead of a potentially dangerous weekend windstorm.

“A lot of branches had broken from the ice. And now, they're just dangling there,” said Timber Ridge Tree Service owner Dustin Meyers.

He says he's seeing a lot of similar disasters-in-the-making as crews go house to house.

“It's been busy. There's just so much work out there,” he said.

ASunday stormthat could pack wind gusts topping 60 mph could make matters worse, potentially knocking down large dangling limbs onto roofs, vehicles or pathways where people may be. But a walk in the woods may help you identify the problem before it happens.

“I would just primarily walk around the property and look up in the air and just take a look,” said Meyers. “Look around. There's a lot of damage. A lot of these bigger branches are just hanging up there and there in the front yards, the backyards, the side yards.”

“You have some that are just hanging by a thread. Other branches are just cracked a little bit. You really don't notice them unless you actually look up in the canopy of the tree,” he added.
