Leader of drug ring targeting GR gets prison

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The leader of a California drug ring funneling heroin and cocaine to Grand Rapids will spend 42 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors announced the sentence for Alex Alberto Castro Friday. In October, a jury found him guilty of conspiring to distribute heroin and cocaine.

Federal authorities say Castro led the 20-person operation, which used decoy cars, semi-trucks with hidden compartments and car trailers to ship drugs to Grand Rapids, Indianapolis and Kansas. U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge says Castro maintained the drug deliveries even while in prison for violating his parole in 2016.
