(via WOOD TV 8) — Longtime U.S. Rep. John Dingell has died, his family members told WDIV in Detroit Thursday.
At 92, he had been receiving hospice care at his Dearborn home.
Dingell, a Democrat, was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 59 years, making him the longest ever serving member of Congress. He was first elected in 1955 to fill a seat vacated by his father and retired in 2015.
In a statement released Thursday night, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hailed Dingell as one of Michigan's "greatest leaders." She honored his grit, humility and humor.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow in a statement praised Dingell's love of his state and understanding of its people. She said he "hammered out our nation's laws, forging a stronger nation that could weather the challenges of the future."
