GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The estate of a man shot and killed by a Kentwood police officer in 2016 is suing, saying the officer used excessive force.
Officers started looking for Lamont Gulley after he stabbed and killed his wife Casey Kempker at Pheasant Ridge Apartments on 32nd Street on April 8, 2016. Bodycam video from that night shows Gulley was on the ground and being attacked by a police dog when he was shot twice: once in the abdomen and once in the back.
The Kent County prosecutor ultimately decided Officer Darrin Cline was justified in shooting Gulley in part because he was defending fellow officers, including the dog. Authorities say Gulley was armed with a knife and threatened them.
