Ronald McDonald House asks for help after flood

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — Freezing temperatures caused a flood at the Ronald McDonald House of Western Michigan this week, rendering the Grand Rapids facility unlivable for now.

Now, officials at the charity are asking for the public's help to put up families whose children are in the hospital.

"Michigan and winter is what happened here," Ronald McDonald House President and CEO Marcie Lewis said as she showed 24 Hour News 8 around the damaged facility Thursday.

The flood at the house on Cedar Street off of Fuller Avenue NE happened Tuesday afternoon, when temperatures dipped as low as 6 degrees; it had been well below zero the night before.

"One of our sprinkler heads snapped right off, the whole thing," Lewis said.

Behind that sprinkler head was chunks of ice and a lot of water that started filling the building.
