GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — The Grand Rapids Police Department says it will look into its role in the case of a U.S. citizen detained by federal immigration officials, but that it won't wrap up an internal investigation before a requested Jan. 29 deadline.
Jilmar Ramos-Gomez was arrested by GRPD in November after allegedly setting a fire at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. He was eventually transferred into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE saysRamos-Gomez told officials that he was in the country illegally, but he is in fact a Grand Rapids native who served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was detained for three days before his attorney proved to ICE he is an American.
The American Civil Liberties Union, which is working with Ramos-Gomez's family, asked GRPD to investigate what happened.
In a Thursday afternoon statement, Interim Chief David Kiddle said the Internal Affairs Unit would do so, but needed more time than the ACLU had suggested.
