GRPD release video of cruiser thief's crash, joyride

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police have released dashcam video from a police cruiser they say a 17-year-old girl stole and took on a joyride during the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.

The video released Friday shows the suspect walking away from a minivan police had stopped while responding to reports of a fight around 4 a.m.. The driver of the minivan ran from the scene, so officers abandoned their police cruiser with the keys still inside to chase the suspect.

Moments after the suspect walks out of frame, someone can be heard getting into the cruiser, which still had its emergency lights flashing. The driver quickly takes off, grazing the side of the stopped minivan before speeding away from the scene.

Police have said the driver topped speeds of 50 miles per hour during the joyride.
