KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — It has been nearly a year since a Kalamazoo doctor who was facing the possibility of deportation because of minor crimes committed while he was a teen after four decades in the U.S.
On Friday, that doctor got some good news from Gov. Rick Snyder in the form of a pardon.
The story of Dr. Lukasz Niec went international as an example of how immigration matters are handled in the United States.
But all the 10-year resident at Bronson Hospital and father really cared about was being able to stay in the country he has called home for 40 years.
In February, Niec had just been released from a jail cell where he was held on an immigration detainer after being arrested as he took his daughter to the school bus near his home in a suburb of Kalamazoo.
