GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Inside a non-descript building on Fuller Avenue south of Michigan Street, there’s a place where you can get a hot meal and a friendly ear, no matter your personal battles or station in life.
Unlimited Alternatives is a relatively little-known non-profit that has a big impact on some of the community’s most vulnerable members.
The agency, which has been around for 30 years, is Kent County’s only daytime “drop-in” center for people with mental health or substance abuse issues.
“This place has been a blessing for me,” said Daniel Spriggs, 40, who started coming to UA along with his longtime girlfriend six years ago.
“They offer you free food. People can come and learn how to be sociable and take care of themselves, cook their own meals,” he said.
On Friday, UA was also the scene of a big Christmas party, made possible in part by employees at Network 180, Kent County’s Community Mental Health Agency.
CMH staff members “adopt” UA members who signed up to receive Christmas gifts, each listing three items on a wish list.
