Pence breaks tie in Senate to advance spending bill as shutdown clock ticks

The Senate on Friday was scrambling to take up a spending package with billions in funding for a border wall, as President Trump made clear there’s a “good chance” for a partial government shutdown at midnight.

After keeping the vote open for more than five hours, the Senate on Friday afternoon finally overcame a procedural hurdle to set up a vote on the bill, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking a tie.

Behind the scenes, negotiations were still ongoing into the late afternoon, with Pence seen meeting with Democratic Senate Leader Chuck Schumer on Capitol Hill, along with White House aides Mick Mulvaney and Jared Kushner, hours before a partial shutdown would be triggered. Sources tell Fox News that negotiations are ongoing to try to get some money for border security in a Senate bill.
