Former WMU president named interim chancellor at SIU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Western Michigan University’s former president has been named interim chancellor at Southern Illinois University — the same university where he worked before coming to Kalamazoo.

Wednesday, Southern Illinois University announced its board of trustees appointed John M. Dunn to the interim role, according to SIU’s website. He’s expected to begin Jan. 1, 2019 and remain in the position through 2020 or until a permanent replacement is named.

Dunn was the president of WMU for 10 years before retiring in July 2017. During that time, he awarded more than 50,000 degrees to graduates.

"What a great privilege and honor it is to have the opportunity to acknowledge that many students,” Dunn told 24 Hour News 8 in 2017. “Not only them but their families, their loved ones, what a special day."

Prior to his tenure at WMU, Dunn worked at SIU as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs from 2002 to 2006, and then as interim chancellor the following year, according to SIU’s website.
