Portage woman gets prison for mom's OD death

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Portage woman is going to prison in connection to the intentional overdose death of her mother.

A judge Monday sentenced 60-year-old Susan Kubicek to 60 months to 15 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the May 5 death of Dorothy Allen.

Kubicek's brother accused her of intentionally giving too many painkillers to their ailing mother, whom Kubicek had been caring for months before Allen's death.

Kubicek’s brother said their 87-year-old mother needed around-the-clock care after having her thyroid removed and undergoing dozens of radiation treatments.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department confirmed Allen died of an intentional overdose.

Kubicek was originally charged with second-degree murder for Allen’s death. However, court administrators said she agreed to plead guilty to a less serious charge of involuntary manslaughter.
