Muskegon advances to state final behind rushing attack

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — Led by three touchdown runs from quarterback Cameron Martinez, Muskegon scored 31 unanswered points to beat Zeeland East 45-22 and win the Division III Regional Championship.

The Big Reds will now take on Detroit King for the DIII State title at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Zeeland East tied the game at 14 in the second quarter, but Muskegon held them without a score until late in the final quarter, when the game was out of reach.

“We evaluated at halftime that we made some mistakes with our formations,” said Muskegon head coach Shane Fairfield. “I think our guys were good until the last couple of minutes after that. That was a great football team we played and we should take a lot from it.”

On just the second play from scrimmage, Martinez took it 74 yards to the end zone to give the Big Reds a 7-0 lead.

Following a pair of fourth down stops, the Big Reds added on another score. With just over a minute left in the opening quarter, Martinez broke through multiple tackles for another rushing touchdown from 20 yards out, giving Muskegon a 14-0 lead.

Then the Chix had an answer. Zeeland East quarterback Gabe Taylor ran in a touchdown from 14 yards out to trim the Big Reds’ lead down to 14-6 after a missed 2-point conversion.
