Laywers donate time to help vets with legal docs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Legal experts helped dozens of West Michigan veterans with important paperwork for free on Thursday.

Working one-on-one with veterans, attorneys and law students helped draw up will and fill out power of attorney and medical designation forms.

The West Michigan Bar Association and Grand Rapids Veterans Bar Association teamed up to sponsor first Wills for Veterans event. Dozens of veterans and their spouses packed a conference room at the Salvation Army Kroc Community Center on S. Division Avenue.

Richard Drake, a veteran of the U.S. Marines, and his wife Debra learned of the event from a friend and knew they didn't want to miss it.

"Everybody likes a free lunch, but this is probably more important," Richard Drake said. "You can get a lunch anywhere, but you can't get this kind of service anywhere."
