Muskegon Co. surcharge would fund 911 upgrades

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — A town hall meeting was held Thursday to discuss an item on the ballot that supporters say could save lives in Muskegon County.

Residents are being asked to bump their 911 surcharge to help the county pay for some important upgrades to their 911 systems.

The county is hoping voters will improve the surcharge in order to increase their ability to help people when disaster strikes.

The townhall meeting tonight at Muskegon Central Fire was about raising rates, for first responders to raise their ability to help when disaster strikes.

Dispatchers are currently working with aged equipment, some of which is nearly 50 years old.

If approved, most of the money would go towards towers for an 800-megahertz radio system, already used by most counties in the state. The rest of the funds would go to beefing up the call center and other tech upgrades.

The current radio system can leave first responders stranded.
