WMU scores low on diversity and inclusion report

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — The Race and Equity Center at the University of Southern California issued a report card for institutions in all 50 states, and Western Michigan University has some things to work on.

The report gives letter grades in four categories. WMU earned “Ds” in black graduation rate and black student-to-black faculty ratio. 

“Well, I believe that the campus or any institution, if you will, may be not actually be like racist, but there’s a soft bigotry of low expectations,” said WMU student Khalil Masi.

Dr. Candy McCorkle, vice president for diversity and inclusion, says the grades in the report aren’t surprising. The areas where Western earned low grades are areas the university has already identified for improvement.
