Kindergarten teacher killed in Montcalm Co. crash

MONTCALM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Tri County kindergarten teacher was killed in a head-on crash in Saturday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on M-91 near the Turk Lake Restaurant & Bar in Montcalm Township.

The Greenville Daily News reports Shelly Gilman was driving northbound on M-91 when a southbound pickup truck crossed the center lane, striking Gilman's vehicle head-on. Gilman died on scene.

Authorities say Gilman's young granddaughter was a back seat passenger at the time of the crash and was secured in a car seat in the vehicle. The girl was not injured.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to an area hospital with injuries authorities believe are not life-threatening.

Gilman started teaching in the Tri County Area School district as a second grade teacher at Sand Lake Elementary. She then became a kindergarten teacher at MacNaughton Elementary in Howard City, where she has been teaching for nearly a decade.
