Holland asking public about future of power plant

HOLLAND, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — What to do with a defunct coal plant taking up valuable waterfront space will be decided over the next year or so in Holland.

The city plans to redevelop the site of the James DeYoung plant. The public will get to weigh in on what that property should look like during public sessions starting this weekend.

“What are their goals, aspirations? What would they like to see for the greater Holland waterfront?” Asked Mark Vanderploeg, Director of Holland Neighborhood and Community Services.

When Holland was developing in the late 19th century, it made sense to allow industrial access to the waterfront that would never be allowed now.

“That property since it first came online in 1940, I believe, has probably been behind barbed wire,” Vanderploeg said.
