Severe storms possible Tuesday night into Wednesday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The slight risk of severe weather for Central  and Southern Lower Michigan later Tuesday is somewhat unusual, since  this year has proven to be relatively quiet, weather-wise.

SEVERE WEATHER TOTALS

Through  Sept. 24, Michigan has only recorded 273 severe weather reports — well  below the to-date average of 360 reports, and far lower than its Midwest  counterparts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

Severe weather reports in Michigan and surrounding states through September 24th.      The quiet weather trend is national, based on the current count of  tornadoes. This year's tornado tally so far is well below the to-date  average of 1,231 reports, and is second only to 2013 for fewest number  of tornadoes in 13 years.

WHAT'S COMING

Storm  Team 8 is tracking a cold front marching through the North-Central  Plains toward the Great Lakes that could add to Michigan's severe  weather reports.

Lower Michigan is in the warm, bouyant air as a cold front approaches. Dew point temperatures are summer-like, indicating a higher level of moisture in the atmosphere.
