GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The slight risk of severe weather for Central and Southern Lower Michigan later Tuesday is somewhat unusual, since this year has proven to be relatively quiet, weather-wise.

Through Sept. 24, Michigan has only recorded 273 severe weather reports — well below the to-date average of 360 reports, and far lower than its Midwest counterparts of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

This year's tornado tally so far is well below the to-date average of 1,231 reports, and is second only to 2013 for fewest number of tornadoes in 13 years.

Storm Team 8 is tracking a cold front marching through the North-Central Plains toward the Great Lakes that could add to Michigan's severe weather reports.
Lower Michigan is in the warm, bouyant air as a cold front approaches. Dew point temperatures are summer-like, indicating a higher level of moisture in the atmosphere.
