Inside Marshall house that inspired book, major movie

MARSHALL, Mich. (WOOD) — While Jack Black and Cate Blanchett’s new movie hits theaters nationwide Friday, Marshall residents get to see it a day earlier.

As it turns out, Marshall inspired the 1973 children's novel turned major motion picture, "The House with a Clock in Its Walls."

The real house with a clock in its walls is in Marshall. Built in 1872, it provided the setting for the book by John Bellairs, who was born and raised in Marshall.

"It was absolutely inspired, 100 percent by Marshall itself and the house," said Josh Wittorff.

His partner, Jeff Hamilton, bought the house in 2016 and has since restored it to its original glory.
