Recent heavy rain a boom for local farmers

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Storms through the first half of the week caused power outages, damage and some minor flooding in West Michigan — but for many farmers, the rain has been a miracle.

"As a grower we thought, thank the Lord. We've been waiting for like two months for rain to come," said Philip Schwallier, who along with his wife owns Schwallier's Country Basket south of Sparta. "With this rain, it will finish it off. We'll have a gorgeous apple crop. It was a lifesaver."

The rain that fell between Sunday and Wednesday is nearly equal to the total rainfall for all of June and July, Storm Team 8 says.
