WWII pilot sees Flying Fortress again at Air Zoo

PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — More than 70 years ago, Lester Ippel flew a B-17 over Nazi Germany.

Now 96, he got to see one of the World War II-era planes Wednesday while it's visiting the Kalamazoo Air Zoo, and the memories began to come back.

"Thinking about all the good times I had in it and how safe a plane it was. Very reliable. It's a good airplane," Ippel said of the B-17, dubbed the Flying Fortress for its sturdiness.
