GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A babysitter who took a Grand Rapids baby, sparking an Amber Alert, has been formally charged with kidnapping involving child enticement.
Iyesa Catheribe Gibbs appeared in a Grand Rapids court Monday, where she was arraigned on the charge. Judge Jennifer Faber set her bond at $50,000 cash surety.
Gibbs, 19, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon, more than 24 hours after she left Cambridge Apartments with 1-year-old Miquis Jenkins and never came back.
The baby’s mother, Laquaya Gillard, began messaging and calling Gibbs on Facebook just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. She said she could see Gibbs was seeing the messages, but wasn’t responding. Gillard said Gibbs blocked her on Facebook just before 11 p.m.
On Thursday, neighbors say Gibbs dropped Miquis off at her apartment in a Benton Harbor home shortly before 3 p.m., where officers found the child. Authorities took Miquis to a hospital to be checked out because he was having difficulty waking, but he is expected to be OK.
Gibbs was later found in the Benton Harbor area and taken into custody.
Gibbs’ next court hearing — a preliminary exam — is scheduled for Aug. 21. The kidnapping chargecarries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
