GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say a gunman who barricaded himself inside a southeast side home has surrendered.
Grand Rapids Police Department Sgt. Cathy Williams said the suspect had "had enough" and came out of the house after about seven hours. She said there was no use of force by police and no one was injured during the standoff.
She said the gunman must still be evaluated by medical personnel, but he had no obvious injuries from the shooting that sparked the standoff.
The incident started around 1 a.m. Monday when officers authorities received multiple calls of shots fired in the 3200 block of Marshall Avenue. Witnesses said the suspect then entered an apartment inside the multi-unit house near the intersection of 33rd Street and Marshall Avenue, east of Eastern Avenue.
Police said all units in the building were evacuated. They also advised residents near the scene to stay inside or call GRPD for an escort.
Negotiators spent hours trying to communicate with the suspect, who is a 38-year-old man who lives in the multi-unit house.
Police said the road would remain closed for at least an hour after the standoff so they can process the crime scene.
