GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For the first time, Michigan voters will have a third choice on their primary ballot when it comes to the state’s top office.
This is the first year the Libertarian Party qualifies to be on the primary ballot, based on votes for their party during the 2016 presidential election. And for their first primary ballot appearance, they will have a chance at the top state race.
Voters will have an option of two Libertarian candidates who are running for governor: John Tatar and Bill Gileneau.
Tatar is a retired teacher and a military veteran; Gelineau is a real estate and title businessman.
Before they go head-to-head in the Aug. 7 primary, they’ll face off at WOOD TV8 in a special one-hour taped debate, which will air 10 a.m. Sunday July 15, in place of “To The Point.”
The Republican and Democratic gubernatorial candidates already faced off in their party debates, which aired live on WOOD TV8 May 9 and June 20, respectively.
