As Grand Rapids continues to grow, Police Chief David Rahinsky says he wants to establish a police service that covers downtown.

If trends continue, downtown will account for nearly 20 percent of calls for service to the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Currently there are four service areas — one for each quadrant of the city.

As part of the community policing effort, the service areas help officers concentrate on specific neighborhoods and issues.

Rahinsky says the growth of downtown Grand Rapids necessitated the need for the new service area.

Currently, downtown is covered by the GRPD’s West Service and North Service areas.

But Rahinsky says staffing the new district won’t come at the expense of other neighborhoods.
