Glenn McDuffie, who claims to be the man kissing the nurse in the iconic WWII photo, died Sunday in Dallas. He was 86.
The photo was taken in New York City in 1945 by a Life Magazine photographer.
Others have claimed to be the man in the photo, but in 2008 McDuffie was identified as the man by a forensic scientist.
McDuffie told the Associated Press he didn't even know the nurse, "I ran out in the street, and then I saw that nurse I just went right to her and kissed her. We never spoke a word."
McDuffie smooched the nurse after he heard the news Japan had surrendered in WWII.
