Yes, the 50's were from all accounts, a wonderful time to be alive in America.  The post-war baby boom combined with a unprecedented period of growth and expansion of the U.S. economy meant times were indeed good and because of that, lots of stuff needed to be marketed to a demand-hungry public.

But as wonderfully bliss as the 1950's apparently were, they  most certainly were not a time of portraying the female gender in the most positive manner possible in advertising. In fact, many of the ads were just downright sexist... as clearly demonstrated by the Bell and Howell ad above .
