Algae Bloom Spotted at Duck Lake in Allegan County

The Allegan County Health Department is warning residents to steer clear of any water-related activities on Duck Lake after a suspected blue-green algae bloom was sighted. Samples sent to the Michigan DNR confirmed its presence.

Algal blooms typically occur in the summer when warm temperatures and sunshine combine with nutrients in the water to feed the algae. The harmful blooms can last for several days or sometimes even months. Exposure can cause a variety of symptoms and illnesses for you and even your pets, such as stomach pain, dizziness and difficulty breathing. If you come into contact, you are instructed to bathe or shower immediately and also reach out to your local medical provider or poison control.
