Authorities were called to the Baltimore County Refuse/Recycling Center on Monday (May 20) morning after workers discovered possible human remains.

The Baltimore County Police Department confirmed the find in a post on X and said that homicide detectives were dispatched to the scene along with officers from Precinct 7-Cockeysville.

Police spokeswoman Joy Lepola-Stewart told the Baltimore Banner that the remains were discovered on a conveyor belt inside the facility by one of the workers.

Video captured by a WBAL helicopter showed officers digging through piles of trash outside the facility with their hands while others used rakes to look for more evidence.

Officials said they are waiting for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to arrive at the scene to confirm if the remains are human. Then, they will begin the process of determining how the remains ended up in the recycling center.

Authorities said that no arrests have been made.

The recycling facility was closed for the day, but officials said they hope to have it running normally by Tuesday.
