WAYLAND (WOOD-AM)- Wayland's fire chief remains in the hospital after suffering a cardiac emergency last Friday.

Yankee Springs Township Fire Department Deputy Chief Dan Miller tells WOOD-TV he's known Jim Stoddard for years.

"He was real good as an interior person," Miller said. "We could count on him as being a leader."

The emergency happened while Stoddard was driving to a wedding in Ottawa County. He was first taken to Zeeland Hospital, then was flown to Butterworth.

"We understand that our community is incredibly generous and supportive, so the question: 'what can do we do to help?' will inevitably arise," Wayland's fire department wrote on social media. "At this time, we request all to uplift Chief Stoddard, his family and his medical team in your prayers."
