New law will let voters decide on hotel tax increase

The Kent County Board of Commissioners will take up a resolution that will would ask voters to decide whether to raise taxes at hotels to help fund a proposed soccer stadium and the Acrisure Amphitheater in downtown Grand Rapids.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill into law this week which will allow Kent County and seven other counties to ask voters about tax increases to fund entertainment and convention facilities.

The county already levies a 5% hotel excise tax.

The law would ask voters to increase the tax to 8%.
