State rolling out program to have water filters in schools

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy is rolling out a new program to protect against lead in drinking water in schools.

The Filter First legislation was passed last October and was created to ensure children are not exposed to lead in drinking water at daycare centers or schools.

Schools now need to develop a water management plan and install filters that reduce lead on drinking water fixtures.

Drinking water will also need to be tested annually.
