Road agencies starting to salt roads

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - The Kent County Road Commission says a major milestone was reached yesterday in the ongoing fight against icy and snows roads.

Director Jerry Byrne, however, is still urging drivers to take it slow, especially this morning.

"The main county primaries did get some deicing chemicals," Byrne said. "It has helped, but it will probably refreeze when we get the lake-effect tonight."

Byrne says drivers should anticipate freeze-thaw cycles.

"Chances are, that pavement has a very thin layer of ice," Byrne said. "The sun goes down tonight, those temps drop back down, any moisture that’s there is going to freeze up."

More salt is expected to be put down today.
