Man sentenced to jail after toddler shooting death

A Kent County man will spend at least 18 months in jail after the shooting death of a two-year-old in May.

Markus Nevills was living with his girlfriend in a Kentwood apartment when he left a loaded pistol in the couch between cushions.

The two-year-old found the gun and shot himself in the head, later dying in the hospital.

Nevills apologized for his actions in court and said he should have been more responsible.

He was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter but that charge was reduced to second-degree child abuse.
