MI prisoners to be registered to vote as they leave prison

Michigan is preparing to be the first state to automatically register people to vote as they leave prison.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the bill allowing individuals who have completed their sentences an user-friendly pathway to become an active voter.

Individuals leaving jail will receive a letter from the Michigan Department of Corrections and Secretary of State informing them of eligibility requirements to register to vote and their option to decline.

Michigan Fair Voting Alliance president and founder Percy Glover says voters are active members of society and that is a big step in helping people transition to freedom after incarceration.
