Schurr appeal scheduled to be heard today

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr is waiting to find out whether he'll face a second-degree murder charge at trial following last year's officer-involved shooting death of Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop.

A three-judge appeals panel will examine the case this morning. This after a lower court ruled that Schurr would face the charge at trial - first in March, then in October.

Schurr’s legal team has previously claimed self-defense. His attorneys also argue common law gives officers the right to use deadly force against a fleeing felon.
