GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - Commissioners have authorized city staff to spend $100,000 on a fleet of eight drones for the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Chief Eric Winstrom previously said he expects the devices to be used during standoffs, large outdoor events and searches for those who are missing.

The move follows months of debate. Opponents raised concerns about possible privacy and civil rights violations.
